The Sierra Club urged Home Depot to stop advertising on Fox News because of the station's alleged poor reporting of global warming. It will send a petition to Home Depot with 40,000 signatures.
Home Depot is promoting its green-themed campaign to help consumers choose environmentally friendly products, which it labels at its home ware retail locations around the country. "We view this not as hostile to Home Depot," Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club, told reporters on a conference call this afternoon. "We think their leadership gives us an opportunity to show Fox that there are elements in the business community that don''t find its global warming reporting acceptable."
Pope said Fox reporters and commentators had consistently obscured the scientific consensus that global warming is primarily caused by human emissions of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide, and that the consequences of runaway global warming will have significant negative impacts around the world. Rupert Murdoch, the president of News Corp., which owns Fox, recently instituted a campaign to reduce carbon emissions created by his business. Pope said the petition to Home Depot is the start of a campaign directed at advertisers on Fox News, but he refused to reveal which companies would be targeted next.
