In a victory for advocates, PepsiCo Inc. will begin labeling its Aquafina water with the words "Public Water Source" to note that the water comes from the same source as the water flowing out of taps in millions of homes across America.
Environmental advocates have increasingly fought against the bottled water industry, because the bottling of water in plastic -- which is made from petroleum -- and the shipping of millions of bottles across the country and world is seen as an unnecessary waste when high-quality water flows from the taps in any area served by a public water system.
The insult to that injury has always been that many water companies simply bottle tap water and sell it for $1 or more per bottle -- a rate far exceeding the cost to homeowners using the tap.
