Big farmers who grow corn, cotton, rice, soybeans and wheat on big farms at high profits are those that have benefited most from the farm bill over the years -- reaping about 92% of the $21 billion doled out last year alone, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
And, despite some cracks in the Depression era system, the farm bill now being negotiated in Congress does little to stop that. Farmers making more than $1 million would be prevented from receiving payments -- down from $2.5 million in previous bills, and smaller specialty crops will get a slice of the subsidies.
Of course, a husband-wife team could still rake in taxpayer dollars with an income of $2 million.
