One of the world's first and largest solar thermal plants has just found a major purchaser for its electricity -- Pacific Gas & Electric, the utility that supplies much of California's energy.
The technology promises to convert more energy from the sun into electricity by capturing not solar rays, but solar heat. The Solel Solar Systems project in the Mojave desert aims to install 1.2 million mirrors over nine square miles by 2011.
The technology produces electricity at about one third the cost of more widespread solar panels that can be seen on residential roofs around the country.
