General Motors had expected hybrid technology to boost the fuel efficiency of its SUV fleet about 25% -- but a new projection has upped that expectation to 40%.
The gains are less than some other brands, but these trucks retain more of the muscle some drivers want, if not need. For perspective, the big guys like the Chevrolet Tahoes and GMC Yukons will still only achieve 19 or 20 miles a gallon in city driving, when hybrid engines are most effective.
That still falls far short of the 35 mpg fleetwide requirement that the Senate has passed, and the House will soon consider.
