It's hard to hear anything about going green these days without hearing about the compact fluorescent lightbulb, so it is perhaps no surprise that a major manufacturer of lightbulbs and lighting, Osram Sylvania, today pledged to green up its operations.

It joined the Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Leaders program, which helps companies measure their current greenhouse gas emissions, set goals and create strategies for reducing emissions. Here's a look at what Sylvania is or will do:

  • Cut energy by 10% in 2007 at all North American facilities.
  • Avoided the use of close to 1.4 million pounds of lead from its incandescent, halogen and HID lamps, by using lead-free welded bases and aiming to remove lead completely from ballasts.
  • Will replace polyvinychloride (PVC) packaging with 100% recycled paperboard or more benign and recyclable plastics.
