Across Central Texas, in the vicinity of President Bush's ranch in Crawford, congregations are going green.
Texas, already a leader in wind power -- as well as the oil that helped make the Bush family fortune -- is also seeing a groundswell in evangelical interest among Christian congregations whose politics have traditionally leaned toward a conservatism that didn't embrace environmentalism. As that changes, the politics of environmental protection is changing.
If the conservative Christian base for the Republican party tells it to "care for creation" -- as the mantra goes among progressive congregations -- conservative politicians will take notice. That is happening, and it's a welcome development in the trend toward a more aggressive era of environmental protection in the United States.
