A new issue has surfaced in the growing scandal involving the toxic chemical formaldehyde, the federal government and thousands of trailers built to house families left homeless after Hurricane Katrina.

While those at the top of FEMA were aware of possible chemical contamination of these trailers, the GSA was auctioning off 40,000 of them to the general public and trailer dealers alike.

In news to many, formaldehyde is a component in several building materials used in the construction of trailers.

Off-gases from these materials are known to present health hazards including respiratory ailments.
