1 Leafblower Equals Pollution Of Many Cars

Programs Spring Up To Encourage Exchange Of Old Models For New

By Dan Shapley

Leaf blowers may be small, but they produce a lot of pollution.

The California EPA in 2000 estimated that a 1999 leaf blower used for a half hour produced as much hydrocarbon emissions as a car driven 2,200 to 7,700 miles at 30 miles per hour, and as much carbon monoxide as a car driven 110-440 miles.

No wonder then, that the little suburban lawn wizards are being exchanged for cleaner -- and quieter -- models. Governments are encouraging people to make the switch as part of efforts to clean the air. It highlights the impact that small engines can have. Lawn and construction equipment are markedly cleaner now than they were years ago, and new federal and state rules will require further improvements. When it comes time to make the switch, think clean and green.
