A New Cabinet-Level Committee Has 60 Days To Fix Food Safety System President George W. Bush has given a Cabinet-level committee just 60 days to come up with a strategy that will fix the broken food safety system and get it ready to deal with the realities of a 21st century food production system that is complex, dispersed and international. The urgency of this action is a welcome sign that government is going to tackle a problem that has manifested itself in several alarming ways this year -- toxic toothpaste, tainted pet food and carcinogenic seafood to name a few. Reading reports about the Congressional hearings on food safety this week, it seemed as if the failures of the Food and Drug Administration had yet to become obvious. They are obvious. There is some skepticism about the working group, but we say the president is right to make this a priority for the top levels of government.
