Oil Execs Push Doubling Of Fuel Efficiency

Serious Shortages Near On The Horizon: National Petroleum Council The world is fast approaching a point where energy demand will exceed supply and the United States needs a revolution in energy efficiency and renewable energy within the next 25 years. The country should enact restrictions on carbon emissions, go way beyond the Senate's recent fuel economy standards to double the fuel efficiency of vehicles and take other dramatic steps. Those conclusions, from the report "Facing The Hard Truths About Energy," sound like the findings of an alarmist environmental fringe group, right? Instead, the 476-page tome was the work of oil company executives, foreign governments, U.S. agency reps, business leaders, academics (and yes, some environmental group leaders) on the National Petroleum Council, a group of insiders that advises the Secretary of Energy. Its findings are sober, but the voice delivering the news has such credibility with even those most reluctant to take revolutionary action to discover a path to a new energy future that it should have a tremendously positive impact.
