Some Improvement In Southeast, But Not Enough: U.S. Drought Monitor An extended heat wave in the West led to an expansion of the drought that has plagued much of the Rocky Mountain, Southwest and Pacific Coast for months, according to the latest natural assessment by the
U.S. Drought Monitor, released this morning at 8:30 a.m. A less severe drought grew in the Great Lakes/Upper Mid West, as a drought there spread through Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. The Southeast saw some relief from the historic drought centered on Alabama, but little rain came to the heart of the drought-riddled area, and the overall dry conditions persisted or grew as far north as Ohio and New York. The fire danger is particularly high in Oregon, but remains a concern across the drought-plagued West. There are 53 wildfires burning in 14 Western states and Alaska.
