A Huge Swath Of The West Faces Great Fire Danger Today A red flag warning is in place for a huge swath of the American West today, as the
National Weather Service warns that conditions are ripe for wildfire. A band of fire danger extends through parts of Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Western South Dakota is also ripe for wildfire. The warnings extend to national landmarks like Bridger-Teton National Forest and Grand Teton National Park. The fire season has already proved intense, and fire officials expect this season to be among the worst in recent memory, as drought, excessive heat and a diminutive mountain snowpack make forests dry and ready to burn if the right spark comes along. Those conditions, incidentally, are expected to become more and more common as the overall climate warms, scientists say.
