Dozens dead across Southeastern Europe, as fire nears Athens Almost a dozen people have died since record-heat across southern Europe spawned more than 100 wildfires in Greece. Friday, one of those fires
neared Athens. Days of record heat in the Mediterranean nation have helped spawn 110 wildfires, which claimed two lives yesterday. At least nine others have died from heat-related illness in Greece, and the heat has claimed dozens of lives across Southeastern Europe in recent days. It is the latest in a string of recent record heat waves to strike parts of Europe in recent years, according to a story in the June 29 Monterey County Herald.
