Fire is 70% contained, but high winds could jeopardize progress Lake Tahoe is no stranger to tourists, but typically vacationers arrive to enjoy the beauty of a scenic lake set nestled in the hollow of green hills. This week, a new breed of vacationer arrived: Disaster tourists. They're there to gawk, to take in the spectacle of a 3,100-acre fire that has already claimed 254 homes and 75 other structures, and which still threatens hundreds of homes. At their worst, they get in the way of firefighters, which by Thursday had managed to contain most of the raging fire. Still, with strong winds in the forecast, the fire threatened to surge out of control again -- and the weary crews trying to tackle the fire don't need rubber neckers in the way, according to a story in the June 29 San Francisco Chronicle.
