For about $4 and change, customers can offset carbon emissions from electricity use
A California utility serving 15 million people will offer customers the option of adding a surcharge to their bills to cover the monthly carbon emissions produced by their electricity use. It is believed to be the first program of its kind in the country. Companies offering carbon offsets -- like planting trees or building wind turbines -- will compete for the estimated $20 million that will be generated by the program.
