Tornado that destroyed Greensburg is among most costly disasters for state It will cost at least $153 million to rebuild Greensburg, or at least pay off insurance claims from residents whose homes were destroyed in the devastating May 4 tornado. The total -- which promises to grow -- already makes the tornado among the costliest disasters in Kansas history. The F5 tornado's winds, which whipped up gusts as strong as 205 mph, nearly wiped the town off the map, according to a story in the June 21 Wichita Eagle.
