Could Cookie Monster love anything other than cookies? It seems impossible, but C could just as well be for cucumber in the near future, as marketers team up with some of the most beloved characters from children's TV to sell healthy, natural and organic foods. Sesame Street characters are being used to sell organic pasta, cereal, crackers and cookies. The enormous persuasive power of some of the more recent stars of the genre, like SpongeBob Square-Pants, are being put into service selling frozen vegetables and the like. The days of beloved cartoon characters being used to hawk cheap plastic toys and cereals that leave a thick sugary residue in the milk may not be over, but we can celebrate the move by the creators of some of the newest kid show movers and shakers -- and some of the oldest characters -- to use their immense power over children to sell healthy and environmentally sound foods, according to a story in the June 15 Newsday.
