Georgia Swamp Fire Could Smolder For Months

Share

By Dan Shapley

Rains from Tropical Depression Barry helped firefighters get a handle on the Southern Georgia wildfire that has burned thousands of acres in and around the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge for 50 days. But despite having the fire nearly contained, firefighters expect the fire to continue burning -- possibly for months. That's one tough fire. Barry dropped as much as five inches across the region, and it wasn't enough, according to a story in the June 6 Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
