Barry Doesn't Quite Kill The Drought

By Dan Shapley

Tropical Depression Barry, the second named storm of the 2007 hurricane season, was a welcomed to the Southeast this weekend, where the little guy helped dispel an historic drought in parts of the region. But while the soaking rains helped relieve some of the drought conditions, the storm missed or failed to fully restore moisture, to much of the region. The drought has spawned a massive wildfire in the Okefenokee swamp, which has sent plumes of smoke hundreds of miles and frustrated the best efforts of firefighters. The Southeast was hoping for a good tropical soak, but this one wasn't quite enough. With an unusually active hurricane season expected, however, the region may get another shot sooner rather than later, according to a story in the June 3 Orlando Sentinel.
