In a move that will effectively make all yellow taxicabs hybrids, new rules will more than double the fuel efficiency of New York City's 13,000 taxicabs within two years. The current fleet of Ford Crown Victorias get just 14 mpg. The new rules will bump that to 25 next year and 30 in 2009. Other cities around the country have taken similar steps, but nowhere is the yellow taxi so iconic as in New York. The switch to hybrids there is as emblematic of the new drive toward sustainability in American cities, according to a story in the May 23 Newsday.
