A federal judge rejected the federal government's wait-and-see approach to the testing of a genetically modified alfalfa. The Department of Agriculture defended its plan to test the safety of a new herbicide-resistant alfalfa while it was growing adjacent to non-mofified crops. The judge said that the potential risk of contaminating non-modified crops, and the potential for spawning super weeds resistant to herbicides, should be studied first.
