A "genius" scientist has identified one possible cause of the affliction decimating the nation's bees -- a fungus. The strangely named fungus -- we won't even bother writing it -- has been identified in several California hives, but even the scientist - biochemist Joe DeRisi, a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" recipient who found the SARS virus in 2003 - cautioned that the results are preliminary. Government investigators had already decided the fungus wasn't responsible for so-called "Colony Collapse Disorder." Still, the finding brings hope that some remedy can be found to save the bees, which besides providing honey, are essential for pollinating our food crops.
