Between dust and off-gassing chemicals from the new furniture, the air inside the home can sometimes be as bad or worse than the air outside the home. One of the best way to cut down on such airborne contaminants, as well as pet fluff, is a vacuum. (Another way: Open the window to improve ventilation).
Not just any vacuum will do, of course. Look for one with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter. According to the Toronto Star, the Bosch Formula Electro Duo Plus ($600) and the Hoover Wind Tunnel ($250) both do nicely. And even if they dont entirely clean the air, they will certainly do a fine job of cleaning the carpet.
