India is increasingly buying the coal it needs to fuel its booming economy from Indonesia, according to Lloyd's List. (Indonesia, meanwhile, is turning its attention to nuclear power, with uranium from Australia, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp..)
One of India's chief suppliers had been South Africa, but it's turning to Indonesia, as many other countries in the region have. Indonesia is the top thermal coal exporter.
It's another sign that Indonesia is a surprisingly important player in the global warming debate. The No. 3 polluter of greenhouse gases, behind China and the United States, because of deforestation. India, which is expected to rival those nations as a top polluter in the years to come as its pollution and population grow, is relying on Indonesia for the coal fueling its boom.
