Saturday marks the International Day of Action on Climate Change, a set of synchronized demonstrations around the world designed to demonstrate public support for strong action to counteract global warming.

Coinciding with the United Nations global warming summit in Bali, Indonesia, the demonstrations are a worldwide example of the type of demonstrations going on at the event itself. Unlike those, by committed activists with staunch positions on minute details, this "Call to Action" asks participants to support a mostly generalized, though strongly worded, statement:

"We demand that world leaders take the urgent and resolute action that is needed to prevent the catastrophic destabilization of global climate, so that the entire world can move as rapidly as possible to a stronger emissions reductions treaty which is both equitable and effective in preventing dangerous climate change.

We also demand that the long-industrialised countries that have emitted most greenhouse gases up to now take most of the responsibility for the adaptive measures that have to be taken, especially by low-emitting countries with limited economic resources."

If you want to participate, you can send a message to the U.S. delegation in Bali.

Meanwhile, Al Gore is asking supporters to join him in a similar, more specific, effort. Gore aims to convince the world community to speed up its effort to counteract global warming. Instead of aiming for a successor treaty to Kyoto, Gore which would take effect in 2012, Gore wants a new paradigm by 2010.
