Toronto, which perhaps promoted Earth Hour more than any other city in North America, saw hundreds of thousands of participants flip off the lights, leading to a 900-megawatt drop in electricity demand in the province, according to the Toronto Star.
Earth Hour was seen mostly as a symbol: You can make a difference in the effort to slow global warming, you can do it by taking small steps, and you can have fun doing it.
But Toronto proved that a little goes a long way. Many nuclear reactors produce about 1,000 watts of electricity, so for that one hour at least, Toronto showed how a city and region can get by with a lot less power.
