New York's new governor, David Paterson, has thrown his support behind Mayor Michael Bloomberg's controversial plan to cut pollution and traffic in Manhattan.

The congestion pricing plan would be the largest and most extensive attempted in the United States. It would charge drivers for entering the busiest parts of Manhattan during weekdays.

Similar schemes have worked in cities around the world to cut down on traffic and reduce air pollution.
