7 Superlative Storms of 2007: Hardest to Forecast

Hurricane Flossie

Hurricane Flossie, the only intense Northeast/Central Pacific storm of the year, simply refused to die – or to behave in any predictable fashion whatsoever. The storm rapidly intensified over waters that weren't all that warm – surprising, to say the least – and then remained a category 4 storm for two full days – in some ways even more surprising. As I wrote at the time: "Pretty much every six-hour forecast has predicted that Flossie should weaken ... and Flossie stubbornly refuses to comply." Luckily, the storm eventually did weaken and passed south of Hawaii's Big Island.
