7 Superlative Storms of 2007: Most Surprising

Cyclone Gonu


Here, without a doubt, we must mention June's Cyclone Gonu, the first known Category 5 storm in the Arabian Sea. After weakening, Gonu went on to affect Oman and Iran, countries hardly accustomed to hurricanes. Having caused $4 billion in estimated damage to Oman, Gonu is now known as that country's worst natural disaster in history. There were also serious fears that Gonu might enter the Persian Gulf and severely disrupt Mideast oil production, though these were not ultimately realized.
