7 Superlative Storms of 2007: Most Intense

Hurricanes Dean and Felix

Here we have a tie between two back-to-back Caribbean storms, Hurricanes Dean and Felix. Both achieved Category 5 strength with maximum sustained winds estimated at 145 knots (166 mph). Both also made landfall as Category 5 storms – an Atlantic hurricane record. Never before (that we know of) have the first two hurricanes of the year been Category 5 storms that struck land at this strength. Between Dean and Felix it's hard to say which storm was stronger, especially since the National Hurricane Center still has not yet released its final report on either storm. But with an estimated minimum pressure measurement of 906 millibars – the ninth lowest pressure ever measured in the Atlantic, and the lowest directly measured pressure globally this year – this "Storm Pundit" has to go with Dean.
