The attack on the health and well-being of America's babies and kids continues.
First we had the insane news last year that leading American toy manufacturers were shipping lead-laced toys to toddlers and other kids (even crib toys were found to have lead paint!). Now, even breast milk is suspect if it's served up in the typical plastic baby bottle made with the deadly toxin Bisphenol A.
Last week, the National Toxicology Program, an arm of the federal National Institutes of Health, published a report that amplified concern about Bisphenol A, the plastic ingredient that some independent scientists have long criticized. No surprise among environmentalists. Green people have been complaining for years about the dangers this stuff poses to a growing fetus or child's neurological and reproductive organs. At last it's getting mainstream media attention.
Already, Wal-Mart, Toys R Us and Canada has moved to ban these bad-news baby bottles from their shelves. But our FDA? The people charged with keeping us safe? Not a peep out of them. No wonder: The report from the NIH states that the U.S. government, which until now had stated that the chemical is safe for use despite criticism, has relied heavily on biased industry studies to reach its conclusions. Sadly, no surprise there, either.
Note to FDA: Our nation's kids are waiting.
