Canada, after having become the first government in the world to declare that Bisphenol A is toxic, will now move to ban its use in plastic baby bottles, the New York Times reports.

Canada's review found children up to the age of 18 months are most at risk from exposure to the ubiquitous chemical, found in many plastics, the lining of cans and other consumer products. Studies have found measurable amounts of the chemical in the bodies of Americans, and animal studies have linked it to various problems stemming from its similarity to the sex hormone estrogen.

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is drafting a bill that would ban its use in baby products sold in America.
