Global Warming Has "A Human Face"

Kofi Annan, declared climate change the world’s most urgent humanitarian challenge in his editorial piece, "The Human Face of Climate Change," published today in the South China Morning Post. To inhibit further devastation to the world’s people, Annan demands we, "act now!"

Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations and co-recipient of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize aims to take on another role as leader of humanitarian catastrophe prevention as president of the Global Humanitarian Forum.

The Ghanaian diplomat has been preparing for Wednesday’s launch of the Global Humanitarian Forum in Geneva, a summit to, "urge effective action to protect people who are most vulnerable and in need of help." This year’s summit will focus on the human consequences of climate change.

"Knowledge is still lacking about how the most vulnerable communities can protect and adapt," said Annan. "Indeed, we know more about the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and animals than on the millions of people affected by changing monsoon seasons."

In other news today, Annan’s fears came to life. As the Daily Telegraph reports, Niue, a Pacific island and one of the world's tiniest countries, warns it will sink under rising sea levels, unless rich nations act against global warming.
