Help TDG Celebrate Blog Action Day

Today, October 15, is the first annual Blog Action Day, and it is fitting that this year’s chosen topic is the environment. More than 15,000 blogs around the world, representing more than 12 million readers, are slated to participate. What’s most exciting is that the vast majority are not normally green blogs, but rather cover an extremely diverse range of topics and communities.

The event is organized and coordinated by a nonprofit association, and aims to explore a different theme every year. This first effort is being spearheaded by Collis Ta'eed, who runs Sydney-based startup Eden Creative Communities (a web development and hosting firm), and blogs on NorthxEast. Co-organizers include Leo Babauta -- author of ZenHabits and a writer for such sites as LifeHack.org, DumbLittleMan and WebWorkerDaily -- and Cyan Ta'eed, who is behind fast-growing FreelanceSwitch.

Supporters of the day include the United Nations Environment Program, Google, Reddit, Opera, Wells Fargo and others. Participating blogs run the gamut from Lifehacker and GigaOm to Pronet Advertising and Google Blogs. Many traditionally green sites, from Lighter Footstep to ecogadget and The Green Skeptic, are on board as well.

According to the action’s organizers, "We have selected the environment as the 2007 theme both for the clarity of its importance and the undeniable urgency that issues like global warming and pollution have. It is an issue that can relate to virtually any subject, any blog and anybody."

Each blogger is completely free to cover whatever he or she wants in whatever way he or she sees fit. Some are also donating proceeds from today to green charities. Dharmesh of onStartUps even told the organizers he is donating his entire year’s earnings.

Writing in the American Chronicle, Kevin Stirtz points out that most participants are neither environmental activists nor journalists or professional writers, meaning they will bring unique perspectives to the issues at hand. "Blog Action Day is important because it shows us the power, energy and diversity of many people to voluntarily propose ideas and start conversations about an important topic," Stirtz writes.
