UPDATE 11:20 a.m.: Hurricane Humberto Downgraded, But Still Producing Damaging Winds And Rain Hurricane Humberto made landfall in Texas in the early morning hours, and has reached the Texas-Louisiana border after growing in strength over the warm Gulf of Mexico waters from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.
A hurricane warning is in effect from east of High Island Texas to Cameron, Louisiana, with a wider area under a tropical storm warning. Those warnings are expected to be downgraded later this morning, as the storm loses strength. National Hurricane Center
At 8 a.m. EDT, the storm was about 25 miles west-northwest of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and moving Northeast into Central Louisiana at about 8 mph. Sustained winds are near 80 mph, with higher gusts. Up to 5-10 inches of rain are expected, with as much as 15 possible in some isolated areas. Coastal storm surge of 3-4 feet is likely near the point where the hurricane's center made landfall, and the storm could spawn tornadoes. This is the third hurricane of the season, and the eight named storm.
