Hurricane Humberto Makes Landfall In Texas

Hurricane Humberto made landfall in Texas in the early morning hours, after growing in strength over the warm Gulf of Mexico waters from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. A hurricane warning is in effect from east of High Island Texas to Cameron, Louisiana, with a wider area under a tropical storm warning. At 5 a.m., the storm was about 60 miles northeast of Galveston, Texas, and moving Northeast over eastern Texas and into Louisiana at about 8 mph. Sustained winds are near 85 mph, with higher gusts. Up to 5-10 inches of rain are expected, with as much as 15 possible in some isolated areas. Coastal storm surge of 3-4 feet is likely near the point where the hurricane's center made landfall, and the storm could spawn tornadoes. This is the third hurricane of the season, and the eight named storm. The latest federral forecast calls for:

• 13-16 named storms
• 7-9 hurricanes
• 3-5 major hurricanes, rated Category 3 or higher
