"How Many Miles To The Gallon Do You Get?" Becomes Social Elite Litmus Test Prius owners are developing a reputation. Hip -- even glamorous. Socially aware. Environmentally sound. Sure. And smug, self-righteous, proud and ... well, you get the point. There are other hybrid electric vehicles on the market, sure. But the Prius is a Prius -- the car that is defined by its hybrid technology defines hybrid technology. Because of that, its owners are an elite set who buy, in part, because they want to be part of the elite. And they want to tell you how many miles to the gallon they get. Like a dieter at fat camp. But let's be honest: As a nation we are fat on fuel consumption, and we need to diet. And sometimes we love to hate role models.
