Marking our nation's rise from Colonial dominance, Independence Day is a special time for celebration with friends, family and communities. Yet that doesn't mean you have to shuttle aside any commitment to a cleaner planet, and wake up on July 5th with a guilt hangover from overconsumption.

There are lots of ways to enjoy the unofficial kickoff to summer and keep things relatively eco-friendly. For example, since fireworks contribute to acid rain and release toxic chemicals like heavy metals, potassium nitrate, sulfur-coal compounds and arsenic, consider some fun alternatives. Examples include hosting a piñata party, going to a laser light show, attending a parade or block party, or making your own noisemakers.

If you spend time in the great outdoors, go prepared with natural insect repellents and nontoxic sunscreens — especially if you hit the beach. Pack along some organic wine or beer, and savor some delicious green grilling. Or host a picnic (watch out for dancing bears).

Another thing to consider is sticking closer to home this year, so you don't have to take a hit from record-high gas prices. If you do need to travel, reduce fuel expense with these tips. Carpool or take public transit if you can.
