Workers at a Dole banana plantation in Nicaragua won a $3.3 million jury award yesterday, having proved to the jury's satisfaction that they were left sterile by the use of a pesticide called DBCP three decades ago. Dole and Dow Chemical were held liable.
The pesticide, used to kill "microscopic worms on roots of the banana plants," according to the Associated Press, was manufactured by Dow Chemical Co. and Amvac Chemical Corp. Amvac settled its portion of the case for $300,000 before trial, according to the AP.
