What Is The Daily Green?

Born on Earth Day 2007, The Daily Green earned a min Best of the Web award for Best New Site, and has since grown into one of the most trusted sources on the Web for news and information about going green. Our mission is to broaden the audience for earth-friendly living by showing how going green is relevant to everyone.

The Daily Green features daily news, tips, seasonal recipes and community photos. We have a host of bloggers and contributors, and our features cover a variety of topics, including gardening, nutrition and food safety; saving money and energy at home, in the car and everywhere else; the latest research about global warming and the health risks of chemicals and toxic toys; as well as unique topics you'll find nowhere else (like that architectural marvel, the shipping container home). We are happy to publish the work of many talented writers, and we're proud to partner with some of the most effective nonprofit organizations in the U.S., including the NRDC, the National Audubon Society and the American Lung Association.

The Daily Green is for everyday average real people. It helps that our editorial team is made up of three real people who really care -- so feel free to contact us.

Heart of Green Awards

The annual Heart of Green Awards honor individuals, businesses and organizations that help make green go mainstream.

In 2009, The Daily Green celebrated its first annual Heart of Green Awards ceremony, with a star-studded gala, sponsored by Ebay, at the Hearst Tower in Manhattan.

The event, part of Hearst's annual 30 Days of Green campaign, attracted wide media attention and served to further the causes of 11 worthy individuals and organizations.

Who Is The Daily Green?

tdg staff

Dan Shapley, senior web editor
Dan, an award-winning journalist, learned about the environment by growing up in the upstate New York with a family that reduced, reused and recycled as a way of life; by writing about New York's Hudson Valley for his hometown paper, the Poughkeepsie Journal; and by never hesitating to ask dumb questions of smart people. He likes farmers and farmers' markets, volunteers for his town's environmental board, has a big pet peeve about wasting stuff (energy, food, packaging... ) and feels most content when hiking with his dog.

Brian Clark Howard, web editor
Brian has been an environmental journalist for eight years, and was previously managing editor of E/The Environmental Magazine. He has written for Plenty, The Green Guide, Connecticut Magazine, AlterNet and elsewhere, and is the co-author and co-editor of several books, including Green Living and a forthcoming guide from Rodale. He grew up in the Midwest and has a masters in journalism from Columbia University. Howard has tried hemp clothes and bags, natural cleaners, biking to work and new light bulbs, and has tried composting about everything under the sun. He also spends a lot of time on the Internet, is addicted to social media, and blogs as the URTH Guy (green Urban Style, Recycling and Reuse, Technology and E-Culture, and (hopefully) Humor).

Gloria Dawson, photo and web editor
Gloria worked at Seventeen and Allure magazines before joining The Daily Green as its first employee. She loves volunteering, cool green urban projects and taking, finding and Photoshopping amazing photos. Gloria was introduced to "green" as an elementary school student at The Waldorf School of Garden City, where composting your organic lunch scraps was the norm. She likes to think of The Daily Green as an extension of the environmental club she started in middle school.

The Daily Green.com is published by Hearst Digital Media, a unit of Hearst Magazines. The people who support The Daily Green throughout Hearst Digital Media are too numerous to name -- it's a lot, and we thank them.

Hearst Corporation, the parent company of Hearst Magazines, has been at the forefront of raising awareness for and addressing environmental concerns. Among Hearst's accomplishments on the environmental front, the most recognized are the company’s completion of Hearst Tower, the first LEED gold-certified skyscraper in New York (The Daily Green can testify, while basking in cubicles washed in natural light, that this is one great building); partnering with the State of California, California Rangeland Trust and American Land Conservancy in 2005 to form the largest conservation easement in history (82,000 acres) in San Simeon, Calif.; and participating in philanthropic tree planting through National Arbor Day Foundation and New York Restoration Project.
